my all-time favorite

Even though everyone else in the world disagrees, I happen to like the movie, The Postman. It meets my number-one movie criteria: it is post-apocolyptic… but what makes it great is that my all-time favorite musician, Tom Petty, has a fairly large role in the movie.

That is right, I have finally decided on my all-time favorite musician, and it is Tom Petty. (Adam was the first to guess correctly…. he wins the Spiderman watch!) It has been hard deciding between him and Nelly (I love the new song, My Place), and JaRule (he’s just so cute!), but I have made my final choice. I like Petty because he has great songs, of course, but he also has a distinct voice and he is a complete original. I think he is the coolest skeleton-man I know! I have seen Petty in concert just once and I only have two if his CDs (Wildflowers & Greatest Hits), but I still think I am a big fan. I just love that voice!

In honor of my momentus decision, Travis & I went out last week to try to find Traveling Wilburys music. They were a band made up of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. We found out that it is just about impossible to find their CDs, but we finally borrowed a copy from a friend of Travis’ at work.

the Traveling Wilburys

Since you cannot find their music anywhere at the moment, I wanted to share my favorite song of theirs, End of the Line, with you. Click here to listen.

Now that I have decided on my favorite musician, I would like to know who yours is. Leave a comment about your all-time favorite singer or band and why they are your favorite. Thanks!

I recently finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. I read it on my dad’s reccomendation and because I heard it reviewed on NPR. I read it in less than 24 hours (and that is with work and sleep fit in as well), so you could conclude that it is a fun and easy read. I laughed out loud a few times, but also felt an empathetic type of sadness. It really lets you take a turn in another person’s head. I feel like I have a much better understanding of autism, and physics, for that matter. My brother, Adam, also read it, so I would like to hear what his review would be….

I have already started in on my next book: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize. I have only gotten like 1/4 of the way through, but I am intrigued. It might not be the kind of book for everyone, though. The narrator is transgender (hermaphrodite), but it is educational and entertaining so far. It makes me wish I remembered all of the stuff I learned about genetics in high school. I am glad that this book is out there and getting so much attention, because I always feel like people totally forget about the transgender population when they are arguing about gays having the right to marry. Not everyone’s sexual orientation is just black & white. Anyway, I will post a better review once I have completed the whole novel.

I also bought another book (I know, I am really into reading right now, it is weird) called The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. It covers another fairly taboo subject, prostitution, but it is supposed to be fabulous. It is something like 800 pages long, so it may be a while before I get to that review.

One more thing, I saw Garden State this weekend. It was wonderful. I can describe it as true and life-affirming. So, I think that is my theme for this week: life-affirming. There are lots of different people out there, and life continues to go on. I can find hope in that.

my life’s work

me1092804214.jpg

I had a slight epiphany the other night. I was keeping Travis up late complaining about how our house is really messy and we haven’t been to the dentist in over a year and I am a complete failure… you know, the usual stuff. I was blabbering on about how my goal in life was to be perfect at everything. Like, I always planned on being Martha Stewart, but much hipper and more beautiful, and the best wife in the world who also happens to be a successful business woman with an emmaculate house, a stunning wardrobe, and a prefectly toned body. I felt sad because I think I may have totally fallen off the track to that goal….

Although we finally unpacked our last boxes yesterday (2 months after moving in), and I do have a healthy collection of Pottery Barn furniture, I would never invite Martha over dinner. We have three huge (I mean huge, like a couple loads each) piles of laundry covering the floor in our bedroom. We still do not have a shower head in the bathroom, and the door to our closet fell off again (it might have been my fault…). Oh, and did I tell you that I killed Jimmy Buffet, our lime tree, and I am late to work just about everyday, and that is all just for starters…

In times when I feel overwhelmed by my life and my job and my sagging exercise routine, I think about something my brothers said a couple weeks ago… that they think I have a fairly perfect life. I am married (to a wonderful husband), have a job, have enough money for food and a new car. Not bad. (Of course, they also told my grandfather that I majored in being a Housewife in college…. ugh)

So, my goal has changed. It may seem obvious, but it is truly tough for me… my new goal is just to be happy. To be happy with myself and my house and my life. It is cheesy but it is hard. I have this drive to be better, to not be happy until everything is perfect. (Which it never is, therein lies the vicious cycle.) But I am going to try to relax. To just enjoy the time I have. Do you think that is possible? I am not sure yet, but I know at least Travis will appreciate the effort.

Good luck moving back to school, Adam & Aaron! Be nice to the bunny and don’t let her get too scared. You both will have a great year!

Congrats on ordering your new computer, Seth! That is exciting!

I heard on the radio that Martha Stewart Omnimedia is going to phase out its retail catalog section by the end of the year in an attempt to streamline the business. I am sad about that because I really like the items they carry in the catalog and on-line.

I registered for a few things from Martha Stewart for my wedding last year. One of the items was the Wedgewood china seen above. Thanks to my stylish and generous aunt Robin, I got one set of four plates, which I love. I have been planning on ordering 2 more sets of the plates at some point, but now that Martha is stopping her catalog I am afraid I won’t be able to get them after this year. I guess I will just save up for them more quickly.

By the way, if you know any other retailer who sells the Wedgewood Platinum Scroll Accent Plates, please let me know.

gold jewelry?

Aug 10th 2004 02:13:00 pm

gold-arrings_1092148041.jpg

Supposedly gold jewelry is coming back in full force. I really like all of the earring above, but i don’t know if 4-inch, dangly, gypsy earrings go with my jeans and flipflops/running shoes that i wear every day.

For reference: the first pair is from Anthropologie and are called the Petal Pearl earrings, the second two pairs are from Banana and are the Draped Chain Teardrop earrings and the Red Feather Leaf earrings. I think the feather ones are quite exciting, but my favorite is the Petal Pearl pair….

Good work with all of the posts lambles! keep it up! we have to get a good fan base started!
