Internet!

Aug 31st 2005 01:31:30 pm

Hello! I am writing this from our ‘office’ in the new place. The Comcast guy came today and installed everything. I am so glad because it is starting to get boring around here… the only problem is that we have to sit on the floor which is so uncomfortable it limits our computer usage time.

Anyway, these are some photos of the new place. I set up a new group on my Flickr for them called Our new place in Eugene. It really is a nice place. I am so glad we got assigned this place instead of one of the houses I had put as my first choice. Many of the houses are smaller than our place… and that is saying something! And they are a bit run-down. When we were searching for our place on Monday I was getting really nervous because some of the places are not the best, but it turned out just fine. It will be cramped but cozy once all of our stuff arrives… which isn’t until Monday. Ugh. I don’t know what we are going to do until then.

Today we are going to go grocery shopping and then try to find the bike trail that goes to Travis’ work. I don’t know what we will do after that. Yesterday, we rented a movie from the library, so maybe we will try that again. We have been walking a lot. The weather is so nice and things are fairly close. The nice market is only about 4 blocks from our place. I walked there this morning and got muffins while Travis waited for the cable guy. It is an easy walk. My school building is probably close to a mile away, but I don’t think anyone drives to school. Oh, something else interesting: Subarus are like the most popular car here. We see them everywhere! So, I think we will fit in…

Eugene Public Library

Aug 30th 2005 09:22:56 pm

Hello from Eugene! We walked downtown to get some dinner and stopped in at the library – hence the internet access. The library is just 2 years old and very nice. I only get 15 minutes at the internet computer, so I have to hurry with this post. We should have internet at our apartment by tomorrow afternoon. We are finding our way around the city slowly, but surely. Today we went to the DMV and got our licenses (see photo on my flickr), went to lunch at Panda Express (again), bought a new bed frame (only $39, no sales tax!), we found a cute market close to our house (with lots of organic stuff and not too expensive!), and we went to a good pizza place for dinner($2.50 a slice!). It was a successful day. Oh, we also found a Bank of America and made our address change. We are so productive. I better get done with this… only 8 minutes left! Tomorrow I should be able to do a normal post… xoxoxo

The end of the Oregon Trail

Aug 29th 2005 12:46:17 pm

Well, we are on the very last leg of our trip. We will be leaving in a few minutes to head to Eugene from here in Portland. It should take less than two hours to get there. Our check-in to our new apartment is at 3:30. I am getting really nervous about our place. I am afraid it is going to be gross and that I’ll be embarrassed when the moving truck brings us too much stuff to fit in the place. I guess I will survive.

Yesterday was really fun. We woke up and walked around the Snake River bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho. It has a magnificent view! We even saw some base jumpers jumping off of the bridge. That made me nervous. I would never do it, but it was cool to see. I really liked Idaho. I kinda wish we could’ve just ended the trip and stayed there. (Travis’ uncle Orval told us Idaho is nice, but I never believed him!) The weather was gorgeous and it has beutiful scenery and the people were all nice. There was a really nice old man at the Visitor’s Center who told us about a museum we should see in Baker City, Oregon. We ended up stopping at the museum and it was very interesting… and it was nice to get out of the car and walk around. I am interested in the Oregon Trail because it is almost the exact route we are taking to get to Eugene. Those pioneers were crazy! It took them 6 months to travel the trail and 1/10th of them died! They had to walk most of the way! I don’t think I would have made it… It is hard enough for me to drive it in three days!

Last night was not the best. Because of a mistake on my part concerning a AAA guidebook map, we got lost trying to find our hotel… and we got in so late we didn’t get any dinner. That was thoroughly devastating. Also, we wanted to stay in a nice place this last night so that we could be rested and treat it as the last day of a little vacation. Well, the hotel is wonderful, but I was so tired last night I couldn’t quite enjoy it. Also, the front desk man made us show our AAA card and he was quite suspicious about mine being expired, but I think we got the discount anyway… I did get a fabulous sleep. The bed was even more comfortable than home! I think I am ready for our big day! We may not have internet for quite a while now, so keep checking Flickr for the updates. xoxoxoxox

Wyoming, Utah, Idaho

Aug 28th 2005 12:30:13 am

Luckily, I have the best husband in the world and I only had to ride in the car today – no driving for me! It was nice, but it is still so tiring to just be sitting all day. I don’t get how that works…

The scenery was a bit nicer today, but Wyoming was quite arrid and it didn’t have very large mountains where we were driving. The photo in the middle above is of Tree Rock in Wyoming. The pine tree is growing right out of a rock! (I think it can also be seen in the Oregon Trail computer game.) I did get to see one small herd of buffalo (or bison, if you prefer), but they were too far away to get a photo. We also drove by close enough to see the Great Salt Lake in Utah, but again, no good photos of it. Idaho is very pretty and the weather is so nice. Seventy-five degrees tonight and so crisp! We are staying at an Ameritel Inn in Twin Falls. It is soooo nice. Much better than the Holiday Inn from yesterday, and cheaper! We have a king size bed! And a kitchenette! Pretty swank.

Anyway, I have been oh so crazy about sending camera phone photos to my Flickr account. I sent 19 today! We are also going to try to upload all of our regular digital camera pictures to Flickr tonight, so you can look out for those, too. This whole Flickr thing has really been fun… Check out my Flickr page and Travis’, too!

good morning from Cheyenne!

Aug 27th 2005 11:30:55 am

These are photos from last night of downtown Cheyenne. The first one is a Wranglers store I took while driving. The second is a giant boot at the town square. The giant boots were all over, kinda like the cows on the Plaza in KC. Anyway, it looks like a nice little city. The downtown was clean and organized. We did see a guy with a cool handle-bar mustache in the Village Inn… of course, we were eating at a Village Inn… I got really sick last night. I am feeling a little bit better today, and we just had some of June’s banana bread, so hopefully all will go well today. We will be heading out in a few minutes on our way to Idaho. woohoo! I want to see mountains and buffalo today!

westward, ho!

Aug 26th 2005 11:28:33 pm

We are on the road! Well, we were on the road all day today, now we are in a Holiday Inn in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The drive was not the most scenic today. Just farmland and big blue sky. I only drove for a little of the way. Maybe an hour. Travis drove the rest of it. He has been my hero on this whole trip and the whole move. He is being so strong! I love him! Hopefully we will make it through two more full days of driving…

Yesterday we got a lot done. We took Seth to Herford House for lunch, hung out with Chelsea, went to AAA with my mom, and had a fabulous Bon Voyage dinner with our families. Lots of fun… It is sad to leave, but I am so tired right now I don’t feel much.

If you want to see the most recent pictures from the trip, keep checking my flickr site. I can post photos to it from my phone. Ok, now I am off to bed! …so tired…

Aug 23rd 2005 07:00:43 pm

…the packing is coming right a long. The moving men are coming at 9 am tomorrow. I think we will be ready. We worked hard all day and now we are rewarding ourselves with a movie!

nigella lawson

Aug 20th 2005 07:58:02 pm

I do NOT need any more kitchen stuff! Not at all… but if I did have a need for more kitchen stuff I would go for Nigella Lawson’s line of kitchen accessories. I love the blue color and the egg shape of the bowls. Check out all of the stuff in the collection. So beautiful, and they have that matte finish that is so nice to touch. (I went ahead and added a few pieces to my Wish List, just for fun.) I already have the Squeezer, which I bought just because it matched my kitchen colors. I didn’t know about Nigella Lawson at the time. I actually bought the Squeezer at Anthropologie. I shop there too much. I will be sad in a week when it is not right outside my front door… but we will save money.

i like this desk thingy…

Aug 20th 2005 02:13:49 pm

This nice cupboard/desk with all the little drawers just arrived at my local Anthropologie. I love it. I think I like it most because it is a beautiful, distressed turquoise color, but I also love all of the little drawers. It is one of their one-of-a-kind floor pieces that they use for display, but you can also purchase it… if you are crazy! The price tag says $5,800. I guess they don’t really want people to buy their display pieces. If I were rich, I would buy it. Of course, if I was that rich I would probably have nice furniture and this piece wouldn’t really fit in. It is old and used and it is actually in bad condition, the back is all cracked. I will just have to keep my eye out for something similar down the road.

flickr pro

Aug 19th 2005 10:29:07 am

Travis has been bugging me to do it for a while, but I finally broke down yesterday and got a Flickr Pro account. With the free account I could only upload about 11 photos per month… Now I can upload almost unlimited photos, and I can send photos directly from my camera phone! The photo of me above (with pink arrows pointing to it) was taken by Travis last night while showing me how to send camera pictures. It is a scary bad picuture, but I am keeping it as my first camera phone picture. I was so excited about it because we went to the ‘Everyone’s Most Recent Photos’ page and it was number one! That is amazing because there are probably hundreds photos being uploaded every minute! We refreshed the page and my picture was gone.
