new j.crew

Jan 31st 2006 03:19:38 pm

I am in the duldrums because not much is happening around here except rain and homework. So, for a little break I looked through the new February J.Crew catalog that arrived yesterday. A few things I like:

It is quite the mix-matched group of things… From the top left:

february InStyle

febinstyle.jpg

I bought the February InStyle at the grocery store last night because I have been feeling deprived of fashion magazines lately. I used to have a subscription to InStyle, but I must admit, I was not impressed with this issue. It seems like InStyle is just a combo of People and Lucky magazines. It seems more about celebrity gossip than about fashion. There isn’t really even any pure fashion spreads, and the “scene & heard” section about celebrity parties is just annoying… Anyway, if this is your favorite magazine, please set me straight.

A few things I did enjoy in the issue:

flowers

Jan 29th 2006 05:06:12 pm

travisflowers.jpgTravis brought home these flowers for me on Saturday morning. The bouquet has sunflowers, eucalyptus, lilies, white roses, and lots of other stuff that I can’t name. They are making our house smell lovely!

The flowers made me very happy this weekend, but now the time has come when I MUST stop putting off my homework. Homework makes me sad.

sweet for spring

Jan 28th 2006 08:18:34 pm

flowerstationery.jpgI have the new stationery set up! It is quite cute, yet understated. I think you will like it. It is perfect for some lovely spring correspondence!

I sure need to keep making inventory. I feel like there isn’t much in the store even though I fnished this new set! I am also trying to make some sample packs of this new “simple flower” stuff to go into the March, or maybe April, Sampler… anyway, that is what I spent my Saturday on… hope you had a good one. xoxo

simple flower

Jan 28th 2006 12:12:51 am

simpleflower.jpgOk, I think I have decided against the tattoo for now. Travis reminded me that I don’t really like pain or needles…

I spent today working on a new stationery set for my store. It is quite cute and simple. Just this sweet little flower and some lines for writing, with matching envelopes and stickers, of course. I will hopefully have photos taken and the set up on the store by tomorrow afternoon. I have so many ideas for new things to make, but it takes a lot of time! I am still planning on some birthday cards, another stationery set, and maybe even a cute little zine/booklet I have been sketching out. School is starting to pick up, though, so I can’t make promises as to when things will be done.

My weekend is not really looking too promising… It is going to rain the whole time and I have papers to write. Ugh. I wish I could go out and exercise in some sun. That would be nice.

a more badass rachel

Jan 27th 2006 03:38:18 pm

hearttattoo.jpgI am thinking about getting a tattoo. I feel like I need more of an edge. I feel like people may be more likely to take me seriously if I had some sort of badass side… and my cute stationery store just isn’t helping me out in this area. So, I either need to fabricate some sort of elaborate criminal record (a la James Frey) or get a tattoo.

My 25th birthday is coming up in about 13 days, and since I have never really done anything crazy and stupid in my entire life ever, I thought this would be a good time for the tattoo. (Ok, one time when I was about 8 years old my cousins and I threw some plaster around a new house that was in the process of being built… my mom will probably say that was pretty stupid, but other than that, I don’t have any wild stories.) So, I really am sincerely interested in tattoos. I think that the good ones can be quite beautiful. If I actually were to get a serious one, it would have to be well thought out and very beautiful and special. I also really, really want a tattoo on the bottom of my big toe, and I don’t think that is exactly possible. I have heard that it won’t heal on the sole of your foot and that even if it does it will rub off. mytattoo.jpgBut, if I was to find someone who would do a tattoo on my the bottom of my toe, I think I would like something roughly like this blue star with “25″ in the middle. It would be tiny, like 1/2 of an inch wide. I also wouldn’t mind getting something like that on the palm-side of the middle segment of my left pinky… but again, I don’t think they will do tattoos on the palm of your hand.

As you can see, I am not that adventurous or badass even when it comes to just hypothetically thinking about tattoos… I am so lame! My other tattoo ideas: I have thought about getting “travis” tattooed somewhere, but I don’t know where… and I would also like a cute little pink heart, but I don’t know where… God, I am so bad at this! Please, help me! Give me some more tattoo ideas or suggestions… If I actually go through with this whole tattoo thing (which, btw, is VERY unlikely) and I use your super-cool idea, I will send you an awesome overly-cute prize! (Giving me the idea of NOT getting a tattoo doesn’t count for the contest, Dad.)

banana – spring 2006

Jan 25th 2006 12:06:22 am

brspring2006.jpgSome things I like from the new spring arrivals: green cotton ribbon-tie dress, cotton sequin-circle tee, and the Julianne platform wedge ring sandal. Those sandals could go with anything! I also love the color of the dress, but I don’t know how I woud look in bright green…

Other than these cute finds, I am actually a little disappointed with Banana Republic so far this season. Navy blue and white is just not my favorite color combo. I am warming up to it, but I still do NOT want this dress.

a shelf and some educational stuff

Jan 22nd 2006 10:09:41 pm

shelf.jpgI put this shelf up in our office/studio yesterday. It is really high (I wanted it above my bulliten board) and the brackets are too close together (I was trying unsuccessfully to hit studs), but I am happy to have finally gotten it up. It helps to have a little extra storage space. I have another set of brackets and board to hang by the desk for Travis to put his books and cds on. He has a lot of cds.

Anyhoo… not much else happening this weekend. I had a lot of reading to do for school and I am currently working on a small paper due tomorrow. I am thinking about blogging quotes from my reading… It might be boring, but maybe also a bit interesting. Hey, we are learning! Plus, I will pick my favorites so as to weed out the really boring stuff. For today’s quote:

“Every art work creates a world in some respects unique, a combination of vast amounts of conventional materials with some that are innovative. Without the first, it becomes unintelligible; without the second, it becomes boring and featureless, fading into the background like music in supermarkets and pictures on motel walls.” – from Art Worlds, by Howard S. Becker, page 63
