vampire weekend concert

Mar 26th 2008 08:35:23 am

vampireweekend.jpg

The Vampire Weekend show was last night in Portland and it was fantastic. Travis and I had a lot of fun. The band is just so fresh faced and talented and adorable… and they sounded great. I doubt they will be in such a small venue next time they come to Portland and I probably won’t get to stand right up front near the stage like I did last night… Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa is my favorite song, but my favorite from the concert was probably M79 or A-Punk.

On a side note, the Doug Fir restaurant and lounge is, in Travis’s words, “hipster mecca”. Every single girl there had shaggy bangs, visible tattoos, and a leather bomber jacket. The guys were all wearing tight jeans and had either a fedora or a mustache…. or pink-tipped hair. Three-day old dirty hair is an absolute must if you go there. I felt like a giant square the entire time I was there and I was wearing my most rock-n-roll outfit… don’t ask what it was. It does not matter since it did not include fingerless gloves or thick-rimmed glasses… god. I’ll never be cool.

obama all the way

Mar 22nd 2008 04:49:52 am

obama08.jpg

Barack Obama came to Eugene yesterday. Travis and I attempted to go, but little did we know that people were lining up for the event at 5 am. And you know what… it was worth it for them to sit outside all day to get their place in Macarthur Court on the UO campus to hear Obama speak. We watched the speech on local news. He spoke about a few of the same things from his A More Perfect Union speech (which you must listen to if you haven’t already), but mostly he was inspiring and relaxed and wonderful. I love him. I love how he says “we” instead of “I”. I love how he has faith in young people. I love how he is honest and intelligent, and how he has the audacity to spread hope. How incredibly exciting would it be to have a president we could be proud of? A president we enjoyed hearing speak? A president we could trust?

One commentator on local news tried to tell us that young people only like Obama because he talks in the correct “inviting tone”…. I want to kick that man in the brain! Young people support Obama because of WHAT he says, not because of HOW he says it. They support Obama because of his ideas, not his skin color or any other superficial trait.

I want Obama to be our next president. I whole-heartedly believe diversity is the greatest strength of our country… and we need a different type of president now. No more Bushes, and unfortunately, no more Clintons. Sorry, Hillary.

extremely good news

Mar 20th 2008 03:25:51 pm

1. Travis and I finally took the plunge and went out and bought ourselves some shiny, new iPhones. They are super-awesome – change-your-life awesome. I highly recommend going out and getting one asap.

2. Travis is amazing and he managed to get tickets to see Vampire Weekend on Tuesday at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland. I can’t wait! The show has been sold out for a while and lots of people have been looking for tickets. I have the coolest husband!

why not go shopping?

Mar 15th 2008 11:31:53 am

WARNING: bellyaching ahead…

So…. it turns out that my husband travels about 70% of the time now. Sucky. I am basically his laundry lady when he is home and I watch way too much bad tv when he is gone. I actually watched CMT the other night. ugh. My life is slowly wasting away… The only good news is that I have been spending a lot of time at the gym. I am also thinking about getting a tattoo… basically just to freak out Travis…. which isn’t a good enough reason, so I probably won’t actually go through with it. Anyway, today I get to spend the day answering hundreds of rude and demanding Swap-bot emails. yay. Oh, and for a little break I can wash the huge pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen. What can I say, being an adult is the bomb.

So… I turn to one of my favorite distractions: digital window shopping. Some stuff I am digging:

Legacy Bridget Clutch from Coach – - Pink Satin Collection and Pink Raspberry Glitter Gloss from bobbi brown – - Fiona Jacket, Lily Cardigan, and Kingston Suede Driving Mocs from J. Crew – - blue metal Andros Bistro Chair from the barn – - and to soothe my lonely heart, Vosages Caramel Marshmallows

Try to have a good weekend despite my bad attitude…

tgif. seriously. This has been the worst week. Travis was out of town and things just weren’t going my way. All I want to do is rent Escape from New York and/or Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (to get in the mood for the new movie, Doomsday) and sit on the couch. I don’t even want to look at a computer. In fact, I am going to stop looking at this one right now… have a good weekend everybody.

crafters for obama

Mar 1st 2008 11:28:26 pm

A blogger named Julie Ree has started a Barack Obama campaign support group called Crafters for Obama. Her description for why she has chosen to support Obama perfectly explains the reasons why I am excited about the idea of Obama as our next president. He is inspiring and idealistic and refreshing, not to mention young and smart and energizing. He is the type of candidate who makes me excited to be engaged and involved in politics. Anyway, I am a crafter and I am for Obama. You too? Join us.

…and to prove the “crafter” part, here are some matchboxes I made last weekend:

I'm Rachel and this is my website. It is where I write about art, crafts, design, New York City, and generally share probably a little too much about my daily life. Enjoy!
